What Did Your Childhood Look Like?

I grew up travelling around lots because of my dad’s job, so I've been lucky enough to live in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Australia. My brother and I were always doing something watersports related with our free time, be it fishing, sailing, kayaking, skimboarding or bodyboarding.

What Came First, Surfing or Photography?

I started bodyboarding much before I ever picked up a camera. My brother and I used to go on surf trips as teens to Indo together, and then when we moved back to the UK, we were always trying to get a wave at our closest break, Porthleven.

How Did You Get Into Surf Photography?

I got into photography through my younger brother who had an old Canon DSLR, which we would shoot skate stuff on. I only really got into surf photography when the local line up got super busy, and I figured at least swimming with a camera I could get amongst the action, as opposed to waiting hours for waves myself.

Where Do You Normally Shoot?

I live in Cornwall so have been focusing my photography there. I have been teaming up with some local bodyboarders recently to document some of the heavier waves the county has to offer at some of the more secretive reefs.

Where Do You Shoot? Water or Land?

I mostly shoot from the water if the conditions are good, but I do take the camera for a walk along the coast some days and have captured some interesting angles from shore. I love the challenge of shooting in the water, battling against the elements and getting in amongst the heavy turbulent water. I also find shooting in the cold water of winter really clears the mind and is a form of escape away from hustle and bustle of life on land.

What Makes The Perfect Image?

Ooo the perfect image! That is a tough one. It is hard to define, as it is so subjective, but for me I think it is about capturing the essence of the session, and the stoke level of the rider.

How Did You Become Involved In The Cornish Surf Scene?

I have a lot of mates who either surf or bodyboard, so that helps. Social media (mainly Instagram) is also a great way to connect with new people, be it surfers or fellow surf photographers. If you shoot the same spot consistently you also get to know the local crew.

What's Your Biggest Challenge To Overcome When Shooting?

Keeping your port clear of water spots, is one of the biggest challenges for surf photographers. The internet is littered with options to try and keep the pesky water off.

Jamie's Favourite Shot Taken

My favourite shot I have taken has to be the shot I took of Steve Hall at a secret North Coast reef deep in winter this year. It was the first time I had shot this spot and the waves were pumping. A super hectic session which got the adrenaline flowing. The conditions aligned perfectly as Steve scooped into an absolute bomb.

Jamie's Future Plans

I have a bodyboarding edit ongoing which I am waiting to collect more footage for. The aim was to show the most hectic waves Cornwall has to offer. Looking forward I also hope to go on a trip this winter to either Ireland or Scotland with a few mates.
