What Did Your Childhood Look Like?
In my childhood I got to watch a lot of Jacques Costeau documentaries and dreamed of spearing fish and exploring the ocean. I also lived by the beach, in Figueira da Foz and in the Algarve, which are both great surfing spots.
What Came First, Surfing or Photography?
Actually a lot of swimming, spearfishing and surfing, although I did shoot abit of the Portugal Rally when I was about 8/9 years old.
How Did You Get Into Surf Photography?
I always liked to draw despite my family´s music tradition. There were not many water photographers back then so I started shooting fisheye inside the tubes around where I lived. I then went to Indonesia a few times and began to publish worldwide after a couple of years. Some of my published work featured in Surfline, Stab and even The Surfers Journal!
Where Do You Normally Shoot?
I usually shoot my pictures around Sagres, which has amazing backdrops and light. That is my studio for most of the time. If the surf is really good I will drive to Ericeira, Nazaré or Figueira.
Where Do You Shoot? Water or Land?
I shoot water and land and I am currently trying to learn how to fly my drone, it makes me a bit nervous though...!
What Makes The Perfect Image?
The perfect image should have some kind of geometry, freeze an unique moment and be blessed with some crazy light.
How Did You Become So Involved In The Surf Scene?
I was a hardcore surfer and surfed pretty good, I am still surfing, it is a long time love.
Do You Have A Favourite Photographer That Has Inspired You?
Not really and I am self thought too.
What's Your Biggest Challenge To Overcome When Shooting?
To be different, to be original, break my own rules and come up with an image that can not be copied.
Joao's Favourite Shot
My favourite shot taken is the James Parry one, black and white, centred and quite static, the opposite of what I actually have in mind when I am photographing.
Joao's Equipment List
Camera & Lenses
Joao still uses a digital reflex camera, the Nikon d850 with 24mm, 50mm and 85mm f1.4 and a 300mm f4 tele lens.
Joao's Future Plans
My plans are to do more story telling instead of looking for that one frame, I want to start my fanzine and continue doing my podcast.
